A small company based in Durham, NC, Sistas Place was born out of our own experiences. In June of 2005, I (Kenitra, the eldest sister) began looking for products for my toddler daughter's hair. I quickly became frustrated with the products found in regular stores and was unable to find products for her textured hair in natural stores. Having extremely hard water in our area, I also found myself constantly looking for skin care products that soothed and moisturized my family's skin, without all the chemicals.

Kyra, my younger sister, had recently grown the relaxer out of her hair, but was having difficulty finding products that worked well on her hair. She was having an even more difficult time finding natural products for textured hair at all! In addition, she had always been plagued with dry, itchy skin and so was always on the lookout for something that moisturized her skin.

Later we found Tuvara "Tuki" King, a natural hair stylist who shared our vision. She is a reformed vaseline baby because, as she stated, she is plagued by a 'special kind of ashiness.'  Tuvara's roommate had seduced her with Aki, a body butter by Chic Afrique, and she has been hooked ever since.  However, she had yet to find a happy medium for her hair which was always dry but with the illusion of luster with enough petroleum based products on it.  Eventually Tuvara began using hair products from Sistas Place and she was well on her way to a full recovery from petroleum jelly from head to toe.

Feeling that there had to be others that shared our experiences, we started Sistas Place to provide a 'one stop shop' for natural products geared toward people of color.

Because we want to stand behind all of the products we sell, we've tried them ourselves (or have had family members and friends do so) and feel pretty confident that you can find something that will work for you. Neither my sister nor I are cosmetologists, skin care specialists, or chemists (we leave that to those who make the products), we just suggest what has worked for us and others. For this reason, we strongly suggest that everyone do their own research into ingredients and to always spot check for allergic reactions!

Our goal is to provide natural and naturally based skin and hair care products for all people, but we focus particularly on products formulated for and by people of color.
