Less than three weeks to go to Christmas and wouldn’t you know it we’ve got two new additions to the family already. No, neither I nor my daughters had unplanned pregnancies, the fact is that our tom cat turned up at the back door this morning with what looked like a small rat. I let him in and he dumped his prey unceremoniously inside the back door and took off again. On closer inspection the small rat was actually a new born kitten! I couldn’t fathom it, unless something had happened to Roo’s lady friend and she couldn’t take care of her kitten.

Five minutes had gone by and our tom cat was scratching at the door again, with
what looked like another small rat. He came in, dropped the kitten and then meowed at me as if to say look after them. Needless to say I was flabbergasted, I spoke to my husband and he said the best thing to do was to find somewhere for the kittens to sleep and then phone the vet to ask about feeding – he also suggested that we should put a note in the local paper to see whether any of or neighbours were missing two kittens.

I wracked my brains about what to do with the kittens. I knew that there was an old cot blanket they could sleep on and that would keep them warm. Now I needed something to put the cot blanket in, I went up into the loft, hoping I’d see something that might provide a bed for the kittens. There wasn’t anything that would suit my purpose but I knew where my husband got his fruit boxes for our greengrocer’s shop. I knew that the company promised next day delivery so I’d only have to make do for a day. I ordered a cardboard packing box from here and was pleased when the box arrived next morning and I lined it with newspaper and then put the cot blanket inside. I went back into the kitchen and picked up the kittens under the watchful eye of Roo. I took the two new family members into the sitting room and placed them inside the packing box, I was given a meow of approval from Roo, who then took up his post as guardian to make sure that the kittens weren’t disturbed by anyone else.
